Notorious B.I.G, Whitney Houston and the Doobie Brothers to Be Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Wed Jan 15 08:05:45 EST 2020

The 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class has been announced, and this year’s list of inductees might make some fans want to dance with somebody.

Whitney Houston, the Notorious B.I.G and the Doobie Brothers are among this year’s honorees. Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, and T.Rex have also been inducted into the esteemed group.

The 35th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by Klipsch Audio, will take place on May 2 at 8 p.m. in the Public Auditorium in Cleveland and will be broadcast live for the first time on HBO. SiriusXM’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Radio will also broadcast the Ceremony with exclusive interviews.

Music critic, manager and record producer Jon Landau, along with entertainment executive Irving Azoff, will be presented with the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which honors songwriters, producers, disc jockeys, record executives, journalists and industry professionals who have made a major impact on rock and roll.

News of the inductees and honorees was announced on the SiriusXM VOLUME channel and the Rock Hall’s social media accounts on Tuesday.

The nominees were sent to an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, historians and members of the music industry. Four of the six inductees, namely Houston, Notorious B.I.G., the Doobie Brothers and T.Rex, were included on the voting ballot for the first time.

Houston, whose vocal abilities caught the attention of multiple record labels, was signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records by 1983. Her debut album included three No. 1 hit singles and topped the Billboard 200 list for 14 weeks. She became the first artist to have seven consecutive No. 1 hits and the first woman to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1. She died in February 2012 at 48 years old.

The Notorious B.I.G., (aka Biggie Smalls, né Christopher Wallace), earned the attention of Diddy’s label Bad Boy records, and by 1994 he had released his album Ready to Die. By the following year, he had become the top-selling solo male artist on the rap, R&B and pop charts. He was shot and killed in 1994 at age 24.

The Doobie Brothers, comprised of core members Tom Johnston, John McFee and Pat Simmons, became a breakout band in 1972. Their hard rock style music was sometimes influenced by folk and bluegrass genres. Throughout their career, they have sold more than 48 million records and charted five top 10 singles.

T.Rex, fronted by Marc Bolan, have been known for ushering in the birth of glam rock. Between 1971 and 1977, the band released one new album each year. After Bolan died in 1977, the band stopped making music. Years later, their influence lives on throughout pop culture.

Tickets to attend the induction ceremony will go on sale on Feb. 27 for the general public, and two days ahead on Feb. 25 for Rock Hall members. Tickets will be available on or by calling 800-745-3000.

Spotify Now Making Personality-Based Playlists for Your Pet — And Ozzy Osbourne's Dog Loves His
Wed Jan 15 08:05:13 EST 2020

Ever wonder if your pet approves of your taste in music? Or would skip the song you are currently blasting in your bedroom?

Spotify is trying to get you some answers. The company introduced Pet Playlists on Wednesday, a furry feature that allows pet owners an opportunity to create an “algorithmically curated” playlist catered to their pet’s personality, according to a release from Spotify.

The music streaming service was inspired to create Pet Playlists after conducting a global online survey that showed 71 percent of pet owners play music for their pets and that 8 in 10 pet owners believe their pets like music — so why not give pets something that’s just for them?

The results also showed that the majority of the pet owners surveyed think music helps relieve their pet’s stress and makes them happier. Additionally, almost 50 percent of the pet owners surveyed think their furry friend prefers certain genres of music.

Before creating an algorithm to help pets find their perfect playlist, Spotify consulted with musicologist David Teie, “who pioneered species-specific music and composed two albums of Music for Cats,” according to Spotify. Teie helped Spotify learn the general likes and dislikes of different types of pets, like how dogs can find music in lower registers threatening. Spotify took Teie’s expert advice into consideration when programming their Pet Playlists algorithm.

After all that work, you get to try it out. All you have to do is visit the Spotify’s Pet Playlists website and answer a few simple questions about your pet: what type of pet they are, their energy level, their curiosity level, etc.

Once you’ve given the algorithm the info, it will create a playlist catered to your pet’s personality that you and your pet can instantly listen to and share.

Ozzy Osbourne used Pet Playlists to create a special soundtrack for his dog Rocky — which you can listen to here — and it appears, based on the video above, that the fluffy pup loves rocking hard to his unique playlist.

Kate Middleton and Prince William Show No Sign of Stress on First Post-Royal Family Crisis Outing
Wed Jan 15 07:29:21 EST 2020

Even in the midst of crisis, the royal family keep calm and carry on!

Just days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their shocking exit as senior members of the royal family, Prince William and Kate Middleton stepped out for their first joint outing of 2020.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge traveled to Bradford on Wednesday to visit a number of community projects in one of the U.K.’s most diverse cities. They appeared to the chimes of bells from the city hall, which dominates Centenary Square.

One royal fan stationed near the couple’s drop-off spot tells PEOPLE, “They looked really happy.”

Kate wore a dress by Zara and a long green coat by Alexander McQueen — her wedding dress designer. She accentuated her signature bouncy blowout with earrings by Zeen, which she wore during the couple’s tour of Pakistan in the fall.

The royal couple will first visit City Hall to join a group of young people from across the community to hear about life in Bradford. They will then meet representatives from local employers and businesses who are helping young people into employment.

William and Kate’s appearance comes just two days after William traveled to Sandringham for a family summit with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Prince Harry to discuss Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down as senior royals. Kate was not present at the summit— nor was Charles’s wife, Camilla, or Prince Philip, all of whom, like Kate, married into the family. She remained in London with her three kids.

After a 90-minute discussion, the Queen released the following statement: “Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” the Queen said in a statement. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives. It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK. These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”

The stunningly personal statement—issued by the woman with the world’s stiffest upper lip— was just the latest breathtaking development in a crisis unlike any other the royal family has encountered in modern history. “We’ve never seen a statement like that from the Queen,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward tells PEOPLE. “But we’ve never had a situation like this.”

A family friend tells PEOPLE that the couple felt they had no choice but to manage things the way they did, even as they went against the family’s “never complain, never explain” mantra.

“This is not how they wanted to handle this, but Meghan and Harry’s hand was forced,” says the friend. “There is so much bad blood in that family — it’s toxic.”

The friend adds, “If relationships had been better, things would have been different.”

Some of the division between Prince Harry and Prince William can be traced back to the early days of Harry and Meghan’s romance, when, sources say, William cautioned Harry about moving too fast. Harry opened up about his relationship with his brother in the ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, saying: “Inevitably stuff happens. But we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment.”

Meghan is currently with the couple’s 8-month-old son Archie on Canada’s Vancouver Island, where they have been staying since late November. Harry is set to reunite with them after he hosts the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draws for the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments at Buckingham Palace on Thursday.
